Kadence - Switching from one Kadence theme to another
Switching from one Kadence theme to another? You'll follow most of our setup instructions as usual, but we have a few tips to make the transition even smoother! Find the section below that best fits your situation.
Switching themes - New site/only demo content installed
If you imported the demo content from one of our themes (or a different Kadence Starter Template), but have not published your own content, this applies to you.
You'll be instructed to use the Kadence Starter Templates plugin to import your new theme. If you imported the demo content from a different Kadence theme previously, Kadence will usually detect that and offer you this checkbox:
Just check that box, and the demo content from your previous theme will be automatically removed during the import process. This ensures only the demo content from your new theme remains on your site!
Alternative option for new sites: If for some reason you are not offered the checkbox, you can use WP Reset to reset your site back to WordPress defaults, which remove all previous demo content. From there, you can install and import your new theme!
Switching themes - Existing website with your own content published
First, a few general tips for all existing sites:
- Before making any major changes or switching themes, you should always create a backup of your website. Many web hosts offer backup services, so check with your host to find out. Or you can install a plugin such as UpdraftPlus.
- Make sure that your site is running the latest versions of WordPress, Kadence, and Kadence Blocks.
- If you are currently using an automatic RSS-to-Email service or a plugin that publishes your posts on social media automatically, you'll want to pause those temporarily. The theme installation process will import the demo posts on your site. Once your theme is installed, you can delete the demo posts and resume your RSS-to-Email feed.
Depending on how your current site is set up, and if you've deleted the demo content from your previous theme or not - you MAY be prompted with the same checkbox mentioned above. We generally do not recommend checking the box, as it could unintentionally delete your own content (such as demo pages you've edited with your content). Any demo content leftover from your previous theme should be removed manually.
