Add image gallery support to your theme

2019 UPDATE: This only applies to the Classic Editor. If you're using the Gutenberg Editor (the default editor in WordPress 5.0+) you don't need this tutorial — you can use the Gutenberg Gallery Block with no theme modifications.

WordPress comes with a built-in "Gallery" feature for your images. Here are instructions for using Galleries in WordPress.

By default, this feature isn't supported in our themes. You can use the code snippet below to add gallery functionality to your 17th Avenue theme.

Click here for instructions on where to add this code in your theme >
.gallery {
        margin: 6px auto 18px;
        overflow: hidden;
.gallery .gallery-item {
    float: left;
    margin-top: 0;
    text-align: center;
    width: 33%;
.gallery-columns-2 .gallery-item { width: 50%; }
.gallery-columns-4 .gallery-item { width: 25%; }
.gallery img {
    padding-right: 10px;
.gallery-columns-2 .attachment-medium {
    max-width: 92%;
    height: auto;
.gallery-columns-4 .attachment-thumbnail {
    max-width: 84%;
    height: auto;
.gallery .gallery-caption {
    font-size: 12px;
    margin: 0 0 12px;
.gallery dl, .gallery dt {
        margin: 0;
.gallery br+br {
        display: none;
.entry-content ul.wp-block-gallery {
    margin-left: 0;
