Brioche - Recipe Index Page

Brioche includes two different Recipe Index page options to help visitors browse and discover your recipes. Both are fully customizable, but they work a little differently. In this guide, we'll explain the two options and walk you through how to set them up. View on the demo:

Choose Your Recipe Index Style

Option 1: Classic Recipe Index

The Classic Recipe Index is a great choice for new and growing recipe blogs. It features dropdown navigation menus, visual category links, and customizable recipe sections to help visitors explore your content.

  • Dropdown menus: Let visitors browse recipes by category, tag, or taxonomy. Each selection takes visitors to its own archive page rather than filtering recipes directly on the page.
  • Featured recipe sections: Highlight your latest recipes, popular favorites, or recipes from specific categories.
  • Visual category links: Help visitors browse different recipe collections through clickable images.
  • Easy customization: Uses built-in WordPress and Kadence features, no additional plugins required.

Option 2: Filtered Recipe Index (FacetWP)

The Filtered Recipe Index is especially useful for established recipe blogs with a large library of recipes. It offers a more interactive way to browse recipes, allowing visitors to narrow down results directly on the Recipe Index using filters.

  • Live filtering: Recipe results update on the page as visitors select filters.
  • Multiple filters: Visitors can combine selections like Dinner, Gluten Free, and Quick & Easy to find recipes matching all three.
  • Flexible organization: Create filters using categories and custom taxonomies like Season, Method, and Occasion.
  • Advanced setup: Requires the premium FacetWP plugin and additional configuration.

If you'd like to go with this option, follow our FacetWP Recipe Filtering Setup Guide for complete instructions.

Setting Up the Classic Recipe Index

The Classic Recipe Index is easy to customize once your recipes are organized. Here's how to get everything set up!

Step 1: Organize Your Recipes

Before customizing your Recipe Index, you'll want to create the categories and tags visitors will use to browse your recipes.

For most recipe blogs, we recommend starting with categories and tags. For example:

  • Categories: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Appetizers, Desserts
  • Tags: Quick & Easy, Kid-Friendly, Make Ahead, Summer, Mexican

If you're new to categories and tags, these guides will help you get started:

Optional: You can also create custom taxonomies if you'd like to organize your recipes further, such as a "Methods" taxonomy with Air Fryer, Instant Pot, One Pan, and Slow Cooker options. If you'd like to use custom taxonomies, our Recipe Filtering Setup Guide walks you through how to create them. Just follow the taxonomy instructions and skip the FacetWP filtering steps.

Step 2: Customize Your Dropdowns

The dropdowns at the top of the Classic Recipe Index help visitors browse your recipes by category or tag.

Please note that these are links, not filters. When someone clicks an option, they'll be taken to the corresponding archive page (rather than filtering recipes directly on the Recipe Index).

The dropdowns are built using a Kadence Tabs block, with a list of links inside each tab.

To customize your dropdowns:

  1. Open your Recipe Index page in the WordPress editor.
  2. Click on any dropdown to open it. You can also edit the tab titles to match your preferred recipe groupings, such as Browse by Meal, Browse by Diet, or Browse by Occasion.
  3. Click on any existing text link to edit its name. For example, you could change "Breakfast" to "Brunch" or "Main Dishes" to "Dinner."
  4. To update a link, select the text and click the link icon in the block toolbar. Paste the URL of the category or tag page you'd like to link to.
  5. To add more links, select an existing item, click the three dots (⋮) in the block toolbar, and choose Duplicate. Update the text and link for your new item.
  6. Repeat for your remaining dropdowns, then save your changes.

You can find the URLs for your categories and tags under Posts > Categories or Posts > Tags in your WordPress dashboard. Hover over a category or tag, click View to open its archive page, then copy the URL from your browser address bar.

Step 3: Customize Your Recipe Sections

The Classic Recipe Index also includes several featured recipe sections, such as Main Dishes, Appetizers, Desserts, and more.

These sections are built using Kadence Posts blocks, which allow you to control which recipes appear in each section.

To customize a section:

  1. Open your Recipe Index page in the WordPress editor.
  2. Select the Kadence Posts block you'd like to edit.
  3. In the block settings, choose which categories or other supported post criteria to display.
  4. Adjust the number of recipes, sorting options, and layout as desired.

You can also duplicate, rearrange, or remove sections to create a Recipe Index that fits your content.

For more detailed instructions, see our How to Customize Kadence Posts Blocks guide.

Step 4: Customize the Rest of the Page

The remaining sections of your Recipe Index, including the circular category images, featured content, and Recipe Label Guide, can be customized directly in the WordPress editor. Simply click on any section to update its images, text, links, or layout. You can also remove sections you don't need or add your own!
