Blog Page Layouts

This article is for Simple WordPress Themes only.

Your theme comes with several blog page layouts that can be used on the homepage and/or on a separate blog page.

  • Default layout – blog posts with read more button
  • Full blog posts – full blog posts without read more button
  • Grid layout example
  • List layout example
  • One full-width post, then grid example
  • One full-width post, then listexample

If you imported the demo content...

If you imported the demo content (posts and pages) — most of the steps in this tutorial will already be complete! You'll only need to follow the steps below:

  1. To use a particular blog layout on your homepage, go to Settings > Reading.
  2. Under Your Homepage Displays, select "A Static Page."
  3. For the Homepage, select your desired post layout. Leave Posts page blank (very important, otherwise you'll have duplicate content on your blog page).

Default layout

This layout appears on your site by default. If you ever want to revert back to this layout, here's how:

  1. Go to Settings > Reading.
  2. Under Your Homepage Displays, select "Your Latest Posts." Save.
  3. Go to Genesis > Theme Settings > Content Archives and configure the settings as follows:

Full blog posts (no read more button)

Follow instructions above for the Default Layout. Then, click here for instructions on removing the Read More button.

Grid layout

  1. Go to Pages > Add New.
  2. Give your page a name, i.e. Home.
  3. On the right side of the page editor, find the Template section and select Grid. Publish the page.
  4. Go Settings > Reading.
  5. Under Your Homepage Displays, select "A Static Page."
  6. For the Homepage, select the page you created.
  7. Still on the Reading settings page, change your "Blog Pages Show at Most" setting to an EVEN number, i.e. 6, 8, or 10.
  8. Save.
Changing the image size: Go to Genesis > Theme Settings > Content Archives. Click on the Featured Image Size drop-down. You can choose between featured-long (800x1100px), featured-wide (800x560), or featured-square (700x700) image sizes.

List layout

  1. Go to Pages > Add New.
  2. Give your page a name, i.e. Home.
  3. On the right side of the page editor, find the Template section and select List. Publish the page.
  4. Go Settings > Reading.
  5. Under Your Homepage Displays, select "A Static Page."
  6. For the Homepage, select the page you created. Save.
Changing the image size: Go to Genesis > Theme Settings > Content Archives. Click on the Featured Image Size drop-down.  You can choose between featured-long (800x1100px), featured-wide (800x560), or featured-square (700x700) image sizes.

Full-width post + grid layout

  1. Go to Pages > Add New.
  2. Give your page a name, i.e. Home.
  3. On the right side of the page editor, find the Template section and select Full Post + Grid. Publish the page.
  4. Go Settings > Reading.
  5. Under Your Homepage Displays, select "A Static Page."
  6. For the Homepage, select the page you created. Save.
With the Full Post + Grid layout, we recommend setting your "Blog Pages Show at Most" setting (on the Reading settings page) to an ODD number, i.e. 5, 7, or 9.

Full-width post + list layout

  1. Go to Pages > Add New.
  2. Give your page a name, i.e. Home.
  3. On the right side of the page editor, find the Template section and select Full Post + List. Publish the page.
  4. Go Settings > Reading.
  5. Under Your Homepage Displays, select "A Static Page."
  6. For the Homepage, select the page you created. Save.
