Kadence - How to update section overlay links
If your 17th Avenue theme includes a section similar to this:
Or this...
Or this...
...it likely uses section overlay links. We'll show you how to update section overlay links in this tutorial!
What is a section overlay link?
A section overlay link turns an entire section (often an image with a button or text) into a clickable link that directs users to another page or category. In the examples above, each section links to a different category, but you can link them anywhere you'd like.
How to change a section overlay link
- In the block editor, click on the Section block you'd like to edit. To ensure you're selecting the Section block, click near the top left corner of the section.
- In the right-hand settings panel, confirm that "Section" is shown at the top, then locate the "Overlay Link" tab.
- Click the arrow to open the Overlay Link tab.
- Under "Link Entire Section," click the pencil icon to edit the link (URL) for that section.
💡 Tip: Having trouble selecting the Section block? Try using List View in the Block Editor!

Remove a section overlay link
If you'd like to disable the section overlay link, simply delete the link in the Link Entire Section box. Doing so will disable the section overlay link. You could then choose to link just the button or text.
Bonus Tip: Changing the Image in These Sections
We cover this in How to Insert Your Own Images, but since you're here, let's talk about it!
In most cases, these kind of sections/images will be set up as background images on the Section block. Background images allow for greater design control, like placing a button directly on top. Here's how to change the background image of a Section:
- In the block editor, click on the section (image) you want to edit. To ensure you're selecting the Section block, click near the top left corner of the section.
- In the right-hand settings panel, confirm that "Section" is shown at the top, then go to the "Style" tab.
- Under Background Image, click "Edit image" to select a new image.
💡 Tip: Once you've selected an image, you can grab the grey circle on the image and drag it around to set a focal point.
That said, sections don’t always use background images — sometimes, an image is just your typical ol’ Image block, like in this section:
For regular Image blocks, simply click on the image and select "Replace" to choose a new image.
