Clover [Genesis] - Category Archive Pages
Category archive pages are where your blog categories live. Any posts that you assign to a particular category will appear on the category archive page for that category. Clover features beautiful and fully customizable category archive pages. Let's get started!
Here is an example of one layout option for the category archive pages in Clover (other layouts are available as well).
How to create category archive pages
It's easy! Category archive pages are created automatically whenever you create a category. Any existing categories on your site will also inherit the Clover category archive layout.
To create a new category, go to your WordPress dashboard > Posts > Categories. Further instructions for how to create/use categories can be found here.

Category archive layout
To change the layout, go to Appearance > Customize > Clover Theme Settings > Category Archives. There are four layouts available:
- Full (example)
- List (example)
- 2-Column Grid - Sidebar (example)
- 3-Column Grid - Full Width (example)
"Sort By" subcategory menu
The Sort By menu is available for the 3-Column Grid - Full Width layout only. The Sort By menu is comprised of the subcategories for whatever category you're in. In the screenshot above, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Snacks are subcategories of the Recipes category.
How to create subcategories: go to WordPress > Posts > Categories. On the left, give your new subcategory a name. Under the "parent category" drop-down, select the category you would like it to display under. Then click Add New Category. Repeat for as many subcategories as you need.
Once you've set up subcategories, the Sort By menu will automatically display on the parent category page. The Sort By menu also displays on all subcategories within the parent category for easy navigation between subcategories.
Toggle Sort By menu on/off: If you're using the 3-Column Grid layout and you don't want to display the sort menu, go to Appearance > Customize > Clover Theme Settings > Category Archives. Uncheck the box, "Show subcategory sort menu on category archive pages?"
Change the "Sort By" text: Go to Appearance > Customize > Clover Theme Settings > Category Archives. Enter your desired text in the Subcategory sort menu text field.
Change the order of categories in the "Sort By" menu
By default, the Sort By menu will display subcategories by ID, e.g. in the order that they were created. If you'd like to change the order of the subcategories in the Sort By menu, you can install the Category Order plugin.
Once the plugin is installed, go to Posts > Taxonomy Order and drag the subcategories into your desired order.
Number of posts on category archive pages
To change the number of posts that display on each category archive page, go to Appearance > Customize > Clover Theme Settings > Category Archives > Number of posts on archive pages.
Category Images
In order for images to display on the category archive pages, each blog post must have a featured image set.
To change the image size on the category archive pages, go to Genesis > Theme Settings > Content Archives > Featured Image Size.
If the images on your category pages are displaying at "inconsistent" sizes, you'll need to regenerate your thumbnails. If some of your images are still not displaying correctly after regenerating your thumbnails, those images likely not large enough to be resized – see this article. Be sure your featured images are sized according to the recommended image sizes for Clover.
Show post date on category archive page
If you'd like to show the post date on your category archive pages, go to Appearance > Customize > Clover Theme Settings > Category Archives. Check the box, "Show entry meta on category archive pages?"
